At the Spring Fair to be held at Birmingham’s NEC from 1st to 5th February, Delcam will preview new functionality in its ArtCAM Pro artistic CADCAM software that will enable quick and easy creation of CAD models of human face profiles from digital images. Once they have been created, the faces will be able to be incorporated into all manner of product designs, including plaques and medals, and the whole range of bespoke items from signs to personalised jewellery.

The new functionality operates through a new “Face Wizard”, that guides the user through every stage from the import of the digital image to the generation of the CAD model. One created, the model can be manipulated using the full range of tools within ArtCAM, including scaling, for example to produce models for a range of decorations of different sizes. It can then be incorporated into the complete product design and then CAM data generated for the manufacture of models or tooling.

The initial use for this new approach is expected to be in the design of plaques and medals. The face profiles can be combined quickly with lettering in a wide variety of fonts to give a finished design. However, the same approach could be used whenever there is a need to provide a completely unique, personalised design.
