Delcam Sales Partner Programming Plus wins KUKA award

Delcam Sales Partner Programming Plus Inc. received the KUKA Robotics Corporation New Partner of the Year 2005 award for its work on the development of the Robot Machining Cell, a combination of Delcam and KUKA technology that allows robots to be used in large-scale machining operations. Wisconsin-based PPI has worked with Delcam for more than five years and has become one of the company’s largest Sales Partners in the USA.

The PPI Robot Machining Cell is a new technology designed to revolutionise large format five-axis machining. By combining the speed, accuracy and flexibility of KUKA Robotics’ robots with the extensive programming and simulation capabilities of Delcam’s PowerMILL CAM software, PPI has developed a machining system that allows customers to program and machine products more efficiently and more cost effectively than current large CNC machines.

“The RMC system allows customers to program and machine products that were too expensive, too complex or too time consuming to machine in the past , ” said Tom Bentley, President of Programming Plus. “The RMC’s user can now easily program any three- or five-axis part, and switch from part to part, in a matter of minutes where previous technology required hours or even days.”

The RMC system offers all the functionality of a traditional CNC machining centre. It incorporates a tool changing high-speed spindle, laser tool probe and laser part probing, plus PowerMILL software. The routines developed within the software quickly produce programs for the robots that allow smooth machining of large components.

Utilizing robots gives the user a larger work envelope at a much lower cost than conventional five-axis machine tools. The RMC system can use multiple KUKA robot models depending on the customer’s needs and can be configured to reach up to a 24 ft. diameter. For additional travel capability the robot can also be mounted on a linear rail. One system can mill two, three, four or even more parts stationed around it from a single position. In many cases, it can also be programmed to load and unload its own parts.

“We are honoured to receive this award and proud to be a part of KUKA Robotics’ success,” added Mr. Bentley. “Receiving this award validates our last year of work and energises our continuing focus on building new business in advanced robotic machining and milling applications.”
